Commercialization of GLONASS
Russia is well on its way to becoming a world leader in adoption of satellite navigation technologies for enhancement of transportation safety.

Active adoption of GLONASS technology for enhancement of transportation safety began back in 2009. Since then, GLONASS equipment was installed in more than 20,000 passenger vehicles, 15,000 police cars, and 1,500 ambulances.
ERA-GLONASS Accident Emergency Response System Project was launched this year in Russia. In three years, the system will cover the country's entire territory. The project is being implemented by the National Navigation Services Provider NIS GLONASS per instructions of the President and the Government of the Russian Federation.
In this field, Russia is well ahead: similar systems in European Union member states, China, and Brazil are still in design planning stages.
Grave traffic accident fatality statistics dictates the necessity of deploying a system such as ERA-GLONASS as quickly as possible. Only in 2009, 26,084 lives – nearly the population of a small town – were lost to road traffic accidents, and more than half of these people died before they were brought to a hospital. Locating, establishing communication with casualties, and transporting them to a medical facility took too much time. In emergency medicine it is well known, that in the first hour after an accident (the "Golden Hour"), human body mobilizes all its' resources for survival. Rescuers' and paramedics' task is to accomplish as much as possible within this "Golden Hour".For this, motor vehicles in Russia will be equipped with specialized ERA-GLONASS terminals. These terminals will permit to instantly determine the accident location and automatically notify ambulance, police, and rescue services of the accident regardless of the vehicle occupants' condition.
As a result, beginning in 2014, once ERA-GLONASS begins operating throughout the entire Russian territory, we will be able to save thousands of lives every year.
GLONASS-based Innovative domestic technologies are already enhancing the safety on Russian roads, and will soon become the backbone of transportation infrastructure safety in Russia. As deployment of ERA-GLONASS System moves forward, competitive market infrastructure that supports the adoption of GLONASS technology for the benefit of various categories of consumers will begin to evolve.
Mainstream use of the ERA-GLONASS navigation information system will serve as the basis for implementation of regional socio-economic and innovative development programs, and enhance the competitive capacity of Russian companies.
