Logistics & Transportation Center for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

In 2010, NIS GLONASS became the General Contractor for implementation of the City of Sochi Logistics & Transportation Center Project for the Olympic Games Transport Directorate.

Project objectives:

  • Building an automated management system for freight transportation (AMS FT) by all modes of transport: rail, air, road, and sea
  • Building an automated management system for passenger transportation (AMS PT) by all modes of transport: rail, air, sea, aerial tramway, and road
  • Construction of the building for deploying the city of Sochi L&TC and AMS RT


Uniqueness of the multimodal transportation management system, being deployed in the city of Sochi:

  • For the first time in Russia, end-to-end technology for managing all modes of transport (rail, road, and sea) is implemented using GLONASS
  • For the first time in Russia, a common integrated information system is developed for both cargo carriers and their customers

Benefits from implementation of the System as exemplified by the City of Sochi Logistics & Transportation Center Project:

  • Reduction by more than two-fold in the number of vehicles required; with planned requirement for 3,000 vehicles, transportation of freight for the Olympics is carried out by certified carriers’ 1,300 vehicles with GLONASS equipment installed. Reduction is accomplished through optimization of vehicle operation and transportation infrastructure facilities capacity planning
  • Control is provided over operational situation, vehicle use in construction zones, and cargo deliveries to Olympics facilities. Control is carried out through monitoring of the operational situation on-line using GLONASS technology
